No matter the region or climate you live in, we all want a lush, beautiful lawn to enjoy with friends, family or pets. What makes artificial grass a good choice is the many year-round benefits it provides. Synthetic turf minimizes the carbon footprint by eliminating the need for watering, mowing and fertilizers while providing a permanent sea of green.

There are many great ways to install and use artificial turf. Putting greens, pet grasses, playgrounds and lawns are all practical installations that deliver long lasting results. Most manufactures offer a 15-year warranty on the grass and many times, 25 plus years is not out the realm of life expectancy. There is up front cost that initially make artificial turf out the price range for most but within 8 years the savings will start to overcome the up-front cost, saving you thousands in the long run.

Synthetic turf before and after installation

Zero Watering Required

Watering is become problematic, especially in dry, arid climates like Southern California and Arizona. But watering issues aren’t limited to these areas alone, according to new studies that are researched by the University of Florida and the Florida Department of Agriculture, certain areas in Florida have sufficient fresh water for the next 15-20 years only. Watering restrictions are becoming a nation-wide issue that needs addressing.

Artificial turf eliminates the need for any watering, zero, none, never ever. If you have pets, the only time you’ll use water is to give it a weekly rinse off and this is very minimal. Outside of xeriscaping you really can’t find an easy, low to zero watering landscape that delivers the look of natural, healthy grass or plants like fake grass.

Zero Mowing Necessary

Mowing has always been a dreaded weekly choir that can take precious hours away from everyday life or money paid towards a maintenance crew. Not only is it a sweaty, time consuming choir but it requires mowers that put out as much as ten times the carbon emissions that vehicles produce. Recently the government has issued emission regulations on all vehicles and most manufacturers are offering electric options. Nothing significant has been put into action for mowers and maintenance equipment to regulate these emissions.

Installing a fake grass lawn eliminates the need of mowing which is beneficial for not only the environment, but your pocket as well. The money saved on equipment needed for maintenance or the cost of hiring a service company to maintain it on a weekly basis adds up over time.

Zero Fertilizers Needed

Maintaining a healthy lawn is a tough task, and it usually boils down to three components, two of which we’ve covered, watering and mowing but the third is fertilization. There are numerous issues that can take place in the lawn, different deficiencies, pest and fungus’s can pop up at any moment and require immediate attention to minimize damage. Many people will turn to fertilizers and chemicals to treat these and other issues on a monthly or bi monthly basis.

These chemicals can seep into the water table or sediments can runoff into ponds, creeks, lakes, rivers and damage our fresh water sources. This is harmful and leads to further carbon emissions needed to clean and filter through these water sources. Outside of the environmental impact is the cost of the chemicals, they add up over time too.

Synthetic grass requires zero fertilizers. Never worry about pest, fungus’s or damaged areas that will lead to re sodding in the future. By eliminating the needs of harmful fertilizers and chemicals you can save 100s of dollars a year!

Lake Mary Artificial Turf Before and After

The Savings Add Up

Between the cost of maintenance or the equipment need to perform the task yourself, fertilization and watering needed to maintain a healthy lawn you can save hundreds and maybe thousands each year with an artificial grass lawn.

Let’s say the average maintenance fee is $100 a month for a full lawn, the monthly watering is $40 and monthly fertilization is $50. The total would add up to be $1,200 for the mowing, $480 for watering and $600 for the fertilization. That’s $2,280 a year in up keep plus the time and struggle. Not to mention the cost needed for the occasional re-sodding of damaged areas and or equipment needed and any repair bills that come along the way.

Most people aren’t installing artificial turf throughout the entire property so lets say you’re using it in the backyard only. This would cut cost down by half!

It’s easy to see all the amazing benefits that installing an artificial lawn brings to the table. And with the many uses it has, this is the way to go for a long lasting, healthier and beautiful outdoor landscape.

This month I want to highlight the most UNDERUSED plants for several of the planting zones. I am located in the Piedmont Triad are, NC (Zone 7-8) and also for some of my readers zones- 9 and 10.

Here are my top 10 most underused plants that have to meet a strict criteria:

They must to grow well in our area, with a minimum of care (OK- you still have to water them- but little else.) They must have several attractive characteristics (i.e Beautiful bark AND leaves, OR great flowers AND branching pattern, etc.) they must not be on every street corner- so we can create a unique look when they are used. Take a look at these selections by zone:

UNDERUSED PLANTS FOR ZONE 7-8

  1. Chionanthus Virginicus – (Fringetree). This small to medium tree has beautiful blooms in the spring. Soft green leaves and fringe like blooms give the tree its name. grows to 20-25 ‘ tall at maturity.
  2. Edgeworthia chrusanthua – (Paperbush.) This blooms when very little else is in EARLY spring. Great fragrance to the blooms- a nice touch to the late/winter/early spring landscape. Use as a small specimen tree or focal point- grows 6-10’ tall and wide.
  3. Cytstisus scoparius – (Scotch Broom.) Very attractive branching pattern, leaves and blooms. Great blooms in the early spring- deer resistant too! Will grow to 3’ tall and wide.
  4. Illisium floridatum – (Anise.) You will notice some crossover with this plant, also doing well in zones 9-10. Again, I Love the red blooms and evergreen foliage. Use as a large hedge, screen or accent plant.
  5. Abelia ‘Kaleidoscope’– Gorgeous full sun evergreen. Variegated green and yellow foliage on red stems. White flowers in spring and will grow to a mature height of 2.5’- 3’ tall and wide.
  6. Corylus contorta – ( Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick.) “Stick’ this in your yard (no pun intended) for a great conversation piece. I also see it quite often in a  container- but it would eventually have to be moved to allow the plant to fill out.
  7. Cedrus atlantica – (Blue Atlas Cedar.) This large evergreen will make a statement in any garden. I love the steel blue foliage and striking branching pattern. Great for a unique look in the winter landscape. Ultimately grows to 15-20’ tall and 6-10 wide after 10 years.
  8. Sarcococca ruscifolia – (Sweetbox.) Small evergreen shrub- 2.5’ ht at maturity. The flowers are fragrant and it is a deer resistant resistant plant.
  9. Hellebore orientalis – (Coral Bells.) Blooms in the winter about when the Paperbush is blooming. The star shaped evergreen foliage is beautiful year round and stands about 2’ tall in height. The pink/white blooms emerge in winter and persist until after the last frost.
  10. Viburnum x burkwoodii ‘Mohawk’- (‘Mohawk Burkwood Viburnum)- Gorgeous semi-evergreen Viburnum that boasts fragrant white flowers in spring. Needs partial to full sun and grows to a mature height of 6-12’ tall.

UNDERUSED PLANTS FOR ZONE 9-10

  1. Feijoa sellowiana (Pineapple Guava)- Versatile and easy to grow, this evergreen landscape plant boasts edible flowers and tropical fruit! It is a moderate grower- growing 10- 15 feet tall at maturity. The lovely hue of the gray green foliage shows well in contrast to the beautiful white flowers in early summer. Tasty guava-like fruit becomes ripe in late fall. Landscape uses can be specimen tree, or can be pruned to a hedge.
  2. Illisium floridatum – (Anise.) You will notice some crossover with this plant, also doing well in zones 7-8. Again, I Love the red blooms and evergreen foliage. The Mexican variety has very red fragrant flowers and prefers moist conditions with full sun to shade. Lower understory shrub 3-4’ tall and wide.
  3. Fastia japonica (Japanese Aralia)– This beautiful understory evergreen also does remarkably well in zone 8. Love the large star shaped leaves. Also available in a variegated variety. Flowers and fruits in winter, prefers a shady site. Grows to a mature height of 5’ tall and wide.
  4. Vitex Agnus Castus- (Chaste Tree)- Beautiful alternative to the Crape Myrtle in zones 7-9. Has beautiful terminal clusters of fragrant purple flowers in summer. Also has aromatic gray/green foliage and attractive multi branching truck. Can be used as a specimen tree or large shrub. Deciduous, growing to a mature height of 15-25’ tall.
  5. Ravenala madagascariensis-(Traveler’s Palm)- This large specimen is not a palm at all, but closer to a banana or Bird of Paradise. Use in zones 9B to 10Needs full sun to only part shade. Landscape uses are as a single LARGE specimen or large accent plant. Give it plenty of room as it grows 30’ tall.
  6. Bauhinia x blakeana- (Hong Kong Orchid Tree)-Considered by many as one of the most beautiful tropical landscape trees. This semi evergreen, long blooming tree boasts gorgeous purple flowers in late fall/early winter. Prefers full sun and grows to a mature height of 20-25’ tall.
  7. Chaenomeles speciosa- (Flowering Quince)- Medium to large deciduous shrub growing 3-5’ tall. Flowers in early spring and persists through summer. Fruit is attractive and tasty to birds. Many new varieties boast deep red, orange and light pink flowers. Zone 5- 9 only.
  8. Nephrolepis biserrata-  (Macho Fern)- Also known as the Giant Sword fern, this is a large presence in the tropical garden. The fronds can reach 4’ long- with the entire plant encompassing a 6’ space, so give it plenty of room. Give the Macho Fern partial shade and moist soil for it to do its best.
  9. Brugmansia- (Angel’s Trumpet)- Beautiful pendulous, tubular flowers bloom on this deciduous small tree/shrub in the late summer, fall. This plant is poisonous, so use with caution in some applications. Grows from 3 to 20’ tall, depending on the variety and 5-8’ wide.
  10. Polystichum setiferum-(Soft Sheild Fern)-Semi- Evergreen fern that will grow to a mature height of 2-3’ tall. The outstanding foliage is feathery and dark green. Can adapt to dry shade conditions once established.

Incorporate these into your new landscape and get your neighbor’s talking! These selections are definitely not on every street corner and will add beauty and interest to your unique landscape. Enjoy highlighting the lawn with unique plants and happy gardening!

Spring is nearly here and what better way to celebrate it than hitting the gardens and installing some colorful perennials to brighten up the lawn. Perennial plants are the backbone of every landscaping garden project.

Unlike annuals they die back to the groundeach year and resurface from their rootstock in the spring time. They generally go through a vegetative reproduction and mainly come in bulbs vs. annuals which will drop seeds to continue the life cycle.

There are many different varieties to choose from. Some will attract butterflies and bees; others will simply add brilliant shades of blue, reds and yellows. Be careful when choosing the right bulbs for your garden, check to make sure they’ll thrive in your plant hardiness zone and what sunlight conditions they require here in Orlando and Central Florida.

How To Landscape With Perennials

Perennials can be short-lived (three years), and some may only flower once (monocarpic) but for the majority of perennials, you’ll be rewarded with a flowering cycle throughout their life (polycarpic). Some species of perennials will last year round; these are evergreen perennials.

Others in temperate climates will grow and bloom during the warm season while losing its foliage in the colder months (deciduous). In some parts of the world, the cycle is determined by wet and dry seasons (tropical). Planting perennials outside of their hardiness zone can reduce their life span and turn them into annuals.

If your soil is clay-like and heavy, it should be spaded and rototilled to a depth of 12”-18” then mix in some nutrients and organic material such as compost, peat moss, sand or other light material. Even if you have adequate drainage and quality soil, you’ll need to till up and prep the ground for installation to a depth of 12”.

Perennial Plants Have Value

The professional landscaper and avid gardener will form a healthy blend of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals along with different shapes and size when designing a project. Trees and shrubs are main fixtures, whereas perennials provide the majority of the color you’ll see in a well put together a garden.

Perennials range from coneflowers and daylilies to ornamental grasses. There’re sun perennial and shade perennial options available, as well as, a wide range of shapes and sizes along with different colors. Go out there and spruce up your flower beds with a variety of perennials, landscaping your garden is the outdoor canvas, paint away. Remember the folks here at From the Ground Up Landscaping are here to help design and create flower beds or any other outdoor project no matter the size.

Underscoring our long-standing mission to educate people about plants, gardens and the environment, the GARDEN DESIGN creates numerous new places and opportunities to increase our capacity to meet this mission head-on. Hands-on, science-based educational programming with real examples and exhibits – for students ranging from elementary school to professionals – is emphasized.

Technologies and practices both old and new will be utilized to restore our urban stream, minimize or eliminate erosion and stormwater runoff, promote percolation and biofiltration, reduce potable water usage, harvest rainwater for re-use, make our greenhouses energy-efficient, and reduce and re-use organic waste.
